"Working together to make a difference"
On the 20th to 23rd of October 2008 Christchurch city will be alive with the 17th International Safe Communities Conference. This is the first time the annual event has been hosted in New Zealand and Christchurch with its tree lined streets and wonderful gardens, kilometres of walking trails, is a fabulous place for the event to be held.
This conference is being co-hosted by Safe Communities Foundation of New Zealand and Christchurch City Council and aims to celebrate and strengthen community safety as an integral part of national and international injury and violence prevention policy, research and practice. As such it has been designed to increase synergies and foster partnerships between those working at all levels of injury, violence and crime prevention to improve the evidence base of community safety.
The Community Safety Program of the World Health Organization was established in 1989 and has substantially increased its activities during the past one and a half decades. A network of Safe Community programs have been established around the world, and this conference is an opportunity for them to meet, share successes and brainstorm solutions.
This productive exchange of ideas and experiences results in attendees’ being inspired and better focussed on their work. It’s also a great opportunity to meet and network with people in similar fields throughout the globe.
The conference is intended for international and national agencies and communities involved in prevention, control and research activities related to community safety with a focus on reducing intentional and unintentional injuries.
The main theme of the Conference is Working together to make a difference. Currently there is a call for abstracts to be submitted and registrations are open. For more information go to the conference website.
