ICB June 2007 indicators

In 2006, the New Zealand Injury Prevention Strategy (NZIPS) Secretariat produced the Chartbook of the New Zealand Injury Prevention Strategy Serious Injury Outcome Indicators 1994 -2004(the Chartbook).  This report illustrates the indicators as charts and presents serious injury trends over the period of 1994-2004. The chartbook presents trends for all injuries as well as the for the NZIPS six injury prevention priority areas of falls, motor vehicle traffic crashes, assault, suicide, drowning and workplace injuries.  The Secretariat also produced an associated report Chartbook of the New Zealand Injury Prevention Strategy Serious Injury Outcome Indicators for children 1994 -2004. The Secretariat is pleased to let ICB readers know that these two chartbooks are currently being updated by the Injury Prevention Research Unit (IPRU) in Otago and are expected to be released in August 2007.
Following feedback from some people who were consulted on the development of these original indicators, the Secretariat had also asked the IPRU to produce a Chartbook of serious injury outcome indicators for Maori.  This chartbook will be published in June 2007.

The NZIPS Secretariat has also commissioned a project to develop Impairment related indicators. The rationale behind this is that the Chartbook of serious injury outcome indicators focuses on fatalities and serious injuries (threat to life) measures. The impairment related indicators project aims to focus on the development of indicators that reflect ‘threats to functioning’. This would provide the Secretariat, and other interested parties, with a complete package of injury indicators including those that focus on fatal outcomes, as well as non-fatals.

Internationally there is not comparable work as the chartbook of serious injury outcome indicators that have exercised the same comparable vigour in the development of these valid injury outcome indicators.
