On the 30th of March 2006 Whangarei was accredited as New Zealand’s 4th World Health Organisation Safe Community, joining Waimakariri, Waitakere and New Plymouth.
A broad cross section of the community have contributed to this achievement, entities such as Northland District Health Board, ACC, the Fire Service, the Police, Plunket, Road Safety Northland, Whangarei District Council, Age Concern, Hauora Whanui, Maunu Children’s Helath Camp, Land Transport NZ, Northland Brain Injury Prevention, Parents as First Teachers and Sport Northland. To be accredited as a WHO Safe Community the applicant/s must demonstrate that their community has met the requisite standard of the six criterion established by the World Health Organization. Once an application has been submitted to the Safe Communities Foundation NZ a site visit is conducted to ensure that the criteria has been met.
